A rare runway piece from Jean Paul Gaultier Fall/Winter 2007, featuring one of the most iconic knitwear designs from the house’s 2000s archive.
An open-knit mohair dress centered around the embroidered cameo motif “La Tempête” (“The Storm”), surrounded by concentric web-like rings in deep cobalt blue, cream and black. The piece combines Gaultier’s fascination with body transformation, sensuality and theatrical silhouette construction through transparency, texture and distortion.
The dramatic elongated turtleneck is designed to be worn extended over the face as a mask, as seen on the runway, while the loose spiderweb knit creates shifting transparency throughout the garment. Additional details include lightly flared sleeves, an asymmetric hemline with the left side slightly shorter than the right, and a spiderweb motif across the back.
Constructed from a soft blend of virgin wool, viscose and mohair, giving the piece an almost weightless feel despite its sculptural presence.
An exceptionally rare archival runway piece, widely considered one of the most recognizable knitwear designs from Jean Paul Gaultier’s later collections.
