Jean Paul Gaultier – Le Grand Voyage Taurus Vest, 1994

A very rare vest from Jean Paul Gaultier’s Fall 1994 Le Grand Voyage collection, combining a woven deep red-and-black silk front with mythical creature motifs — including an imperial-style dragon — and a back featuring the pierced Taurus bull, a defining motif of the season and one that echoes Gaultier’s own Taurus tattoo. The back also includes a central woven panel depicting an ornate portrait framed by chains and flanked by figures, characteristic of the narrative jacquards that defined Gaultier’s 90s work. Only a handful of examples of this design are known to circulate, making it an exceptionally difficult piece to find.

The style has renewed cultural relevance after a closely related vest with the exact same fabric/pattern from the same collection appeared on Euphoria (S2E1), worn by Rue Bennett (Zendaya), bringing fresh attention to Gaultier’s richly textured 90s jacquards.

About Le Grand Voyage (1994)

Jean Paul Gaultier’s Le Grand Voyage imagined a fantastical train crossing remote landscapes, gathering symbols, myths and cultural references into a single narrative. The Paris runway was staged inside an old train depot transformed into a snow-covered dreamscape, heightening the sense of movement and transport.

The collection blended Tibetan-inspired silhouettes, imperial Chinese dragons, zodiac motifs and rich jacquard textiles. Björk walked the runway wearing one of the season’s standout looks, contributing to the collection’s lasting cultural resonance. The bull motif — seen across multiple garments — remains one of Gaultier’s most memorable and mythologically charged symbols.
